Equipment Introduction

Drum Crusher

The drum crusher is a high-speed hammer crushing machine used to process prepared steel drums, empty paint buckets, tinplate containers and other suitable light-gauge metal packaging.

Metal drums must be emptied, opened, drained and inspected before crushing. Containers holding fuel, solvents, chemicals, pressurized material, flammable residues or unidentified substances require separate cleaning, treatment and safety assessment before mechanical processing.

A high-speed rotor drives the hammers to repeatedly impact, deform and break the prepared drums inside the crushing chamber. The hammers, liner plates and screen grate work together to reduce the material, while the selected screen opening helps control the discharge size.

Properly prepared individual drums and paint buckets may enter a suitable crusher directly. Bundled, compacted or difficult-to-feed drum scrap may first require bale opening or primary size reduction by a twin shaft shredder.

After crushing, a magnetic separator can recover steel and tinplate fractions from loosened paint, rust and suitable non-magnetic residues. Screening, airflow sorting and manual inspection may be added according to the material condition and required recovered products.

An eddy current separator is not normally required for clean steel drum scrap. It may only be considered when suitable conductive non-ferrous metals remain mixed with non-conductive residues after ferrous metal removal and proper material preparation.

The drum crusher can operate as an individual machine or form part of a scrap metal recycling line with controlled feeding, optional primary shredding, material conveying, magnetic separation, screening, dust collection and centralized control.

The final configuration depends on the drum material, dimensions, wall thickness, surface coating, residual contamination, required capacity, expected output size and downstream treatment method.

Working Principle

Drum Crusher Working Process

1. Drum Inspection and Preparation

Metal drums and paint buckets must be emptied, opened, drained and inspected before crushing. Labels and material records should be checked when the previous contents are known.

Sealed drums, pressurized containers and barrels containing fuel, solvents, chemicals, flammable residues or unidentified substances must not be treated as ordinary crusher feed.

2. Controlled Feeding

Prepared drums are transferred into the crushing chamber by a conveyor or suitable feeding device. The feeding quantity should be controlled according to the drum dimensions, wall thickness and crusher load.

Bundled or compacted drum scrap may require bale opening or primary shredding before entering the hammer crusher.

3. Hammer Crushing

A high-speed rotor drives the hammers to repeatedly impact, deform and break the metal drums. Friction and compression between the hammers, liner plates and screen grate further reduce the material.

4. Screen-Controlled Discharge

Material that meets the selected screen opening is discharged from the crushing chamber, while oversized pieces remain inside for further crushing. The output depends on the drum material, wall thickness, hammer arrangement and screen opening.

5. Magnetic Separation

After crushing, magnetic separation can recover steel and tinplate material from loosened paint, rust and suitable non-magnetic residues.

Magnetic separation does not remove oil, solvents or chemical contamination from the recovered metal.

6. Optional Screening and Airflow Sorting

Screening can be added to separate different particle-size fractions. Airflow sorting may help remove lightweight labels, coating fragments and other low-density impurities when the material condition is suitable.

7. Dust and Vapor Control

Crushing coated or previously contaminated drums may release dust, coating fragments, odors or vapors. Enclosed feeding, ventilation, vapor collection and dust control should be selected according to the drum history, residual contamination and local safety requirements.

8. Material Collection

Processed steel, non-magnetic residue and collected fine material are transferred to their respective collection areas according to the selected process.

Features and Advantages

Drum Crusher Line Features

Heavy-Duty Structure

The drum crusher is built with a welded steel structure and wear-resistant liner plates inside the crushing chamber. The reinforced machine body is suitable for processing oil drums, paint buckets, thin metal containers and other light scrap metal materials.

Two-Stage Processing

The production line can be configured with a dual-shaft shredder before the hammer mill crusher. The shredder first opens and tears the drums into strips or irregular pieces, and the hammer crusher then performs secondary crushing. This two-stage process is suitable for bulky, thin and hollow metal containers.

Hammer Crushing Process

Inside the hammer mill crusher, high-speed rotating hammers repeatedly impact and crush the shredded metal pieces. The screen configuration can be selected according to the required output size and recycling process.

Magnetic Separation Available

After crushing, the material can be sent to a magnetic separator to separate ferrous metal from light impurities, paint flakes and non-metallic residues. The final separation effect depends on the material condition and sorting equipment configuration.

Optional Dust Collection

The drum crusher line can be equipped with a dust collector according to the site requirements. It helps collect dust and fine particles generated during crushing and conveying.

Convenient Maintenance

A hydraulic opening system can be installed to simplify hammer inspection, liner replacement and screen maintenance. Wear parts can be inspected and replaced based on actual use.

Customizable Configuration

The production line can be customized according to the drum size, material thickness, required capacity and site layout. Available customization options include:

  • Feed inlet size

  • Motor power

  • Crusher model

  • Screen configuration

  • Conveyor layout

  • Magnetic separator
