Copper aluminum radiators are common recyclable materials from cars, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment, heat exchangers and appliance dismantling plants. These materials usually contain copper tubes, aluminum fins, steel frames, plastic parts and other attachments. Because copper and aluminum both have good recycling value, radiator scrap is an important material for many scrap yards and metal recovery businesses.

In Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, used car parts, air conditioner dismantling materials and mixed appliance scrap are often collected by recycling yards. Copper aluminum radiators are usually sold as mixed radiator scrap if they are not processed. However, after proper crushing and separation, copper, aluminum and steel can be recovered more efficiently, increasing the value of the final materials.

Copper aluminum radiators are different from ordinary scrap metal because they contain thin aluminum fins and copper tubes. The purpose of processing is not only size reduction, but also better separation of copper, aluminum, steel and other impurities.

Why Copper Aluminum Radiators Need Proper Separation

Copper aluminum radiators are valuable because they contain different metals in one structure. Copper tubes and aluminum fins are tightly connected, while steel frames, plastic tanks or rubber parts may also be attached. If the material is not separated properly, it may be sold at a lower mixed scrap price.

Equipment Selection for Copper Aluminum Radiators

The equipment configuration depends on the material condition. If the radiator material is clean, thin and pre-cut, a crusher and sorting system may be enough. If the material includes complete car radiators, air conditioner radiators, steel frames or mixed appliance radiator scrap, a twin shaft shredder can be added for primary size reduction.

The sorting stages should be selected according to the materials remaining after size reduction. Magnetic separation is used for exposed ferrous components, while eddy current separation may be considered when conductive aluminum needs to be recovered from non-metallic material.. The magnetic separator removes iron and steel parts first.

The eddy current separator may then be used to recover conductive aluminum from the remaining non-metallic material stream. Additional sorting may be required when copper and aluminum need to be collected as separate products.

Workshop dimensions, feeding method and available power supply are needed when planning a complete line.

QIs an eddy current separator required for every radiator recycling line?

A

No. An eddy current separator may be useful when conductive aluminum needs to be recovered from plastic, rubber or another non-metallic material stream. It does not automatically separate copper from aluminum into two clean metal products. The need for eddy current separation depends on the material produced after crushing and magnetic separation.

QCan steel frames and iron attachments be removed?

A

A magnetic separator can remove exposed steel frames, screws and other ferrous components after size reduction. Iron parts that remain enclosed inside plastic tanks, folded frames or larger radiator pieces may require further processing or pre-sorting. The separation result depends on how completely the components have been released.

QCan copper and aluminum be completely separated in one line?

A

Crushing can release copper tubes from aluminum fins, but complete separation cannot be guaranteed for every radiator type. The result depends on radiator construction, particle size, material liberation and the sorting methods used after crushing. Screening, airflow separation, density separation or manual sorting may be required when cleaner copper and aluminum fractions are needed.

QWhen is a twin shaft shredder needed for radiator scrap?

A

A twin shaft shredder may be used when complete or bulky radiators cannot enter the downstream crusher steadily. Its low-speed, high-torque operation reduces large radiator assemblies into smaller pieces before further crushing. Clean and pre-cut radiator cores may not require this pre-treatment stage.

QCan copper aluminum radiators be crushed directly?

A

Clean, pre-cut radiator cores may be fed directly into a suitable crusher when their dimensions and attachments meet the machine’s feeding requirements. Complete car radiators, air conditioner radiators with steel frames, and units containing plastic tanks or heavy fittings may require dismantling, cutting or primary shredding first.
