QWhat information is needed to select a steel drum processing system?

A

Provide representative photos or videos, drum dimensions, wall thickness and whether the containers are whole, flattened, cut or baled. The former contents, preparation status, attached plastic or metal components, required capacity and expected output should also be described. Workshop layout, feeding method, available power supply and applicable environmental or safety requirements are necessary when planning a complete line.

QIs an eddy current separator necessary for steel drum recycling?

A

Usually not when the feed consists mainly of prepared steel drums and the objective is to recover ferrous metal. Magnetic separation is generally the main sorting stage for exposed steel. An eddy current separator may be considered only when the remaining material contains recoverable aluminum or other conductive non-ferrous metals mixed with non-metallic material.

QCan paint and coatings be completely removed during crushing?

A

Crushing can loosen some paint, rust and surface coatings, but it should not be described as a complete stripping or decontamination process. The result depends on the coating type, adhesion, drum condition and crushing intensity. Dust extraction may collect some released particles, but it cannot replace the required cleaning or treatment of hazardous residues.

QIs a twin shaft shredder required for steel drum scrap?

A

Not in every project. Empty and properly prepared light-gauge drums that meet the crusher’s feeding requirements may be processed directly by a suitable drum crusher or scrap metal crusher. A twin shaft shredder may be considered for bulky, compressed, tangled or difficult-to-feed containers that require coarse size reduction first.

QWhat preparation is required before processing steel drums?

A

Each container should be identified and inspected before processing. Residual liquids, sludge and removable contents must be handled separately, while sealed or pressurized containers require appropriate treatment before size reduction. Lids, plastic liners and unsuitable attachments may also need to be removed depending on the drum construction and downstream process.

QCan waste oil drums and paint buckets be shredded directly?

A

Only properly emptied, inspected and prepared containers should enter the processing equipment. Drums containing residual liquids, flammable vapors, pressurized contents or unidentified chemicals must not be shredded directly. The required draining, cleaning, ventilation and verification procedure should be determined by qualified personnel according to the former contents and applicable site requirements.
